Beloved Australian sports commentator
A leading sports commentator throughout the country, Glenn Mitchell has become a familiar voice for Aussies with his insightful commentaries on AFL football and cricket. He draws on decades of professional experience to engage with audiences, bringing them behind the scenes of landmark sporting events in our history.
Glenn has been a quintessential member of ABC Sport. Since joining in 1990, he became one of ABC’s senior commentators and executive producers. He covered over 130 Tests and one day internationals for cricket, as well as overseas tours against Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, New Zealand and England. Glenn has also called over 900 football matches in the AFL and WAFL on radio and television.
Outside of cricket and AFL, Glenn commentated for four Olympic Games, two Commonwealth Games, and called track and field events for ABC TV’s coverage of two Paralympic Games.
He has also broadcasted for men and women’s NBL basketball, along with world championships in cycling, triathlon, water polo, golf, boxing and netball.
Since leaving ABC in 2011, Glenn continues to provide insightful commentary for a range of media programs, including regular appearances on Sky News, Mix 94.5 and BBC Five Live. Glenn was also the host of Curtin FM’s breakfast program in Perth.
Outside of his presenting work, Glenn has published ‘Pursuing Excellence’ in 1998 to trace the biographical history of Western Australia’s leading sportswomen.
Glenn has held board positions for many sporting organisations, including the Western Australian Sports Federation, the Coaching Foundation of Western Australia, and the Western Australian Paralympic Committee. Glenn is also on the induction committee of the Western Australian Hall of Champions.
In recognition of his service to Australia and the sporting community, Glenn was awarded the Australian Sports Medal by the Governor General in 2000.
