Australian Professional Rugby League Footballer and Mental Health Advocate, Driving Change On and Off the Field
Shaun Lane, affectionately known as the ‘Lane Train’, has been a standout player for the Parramatta Eels in the National Rugby League (NRL) since joining in 2019. His dedication and performance were recognised with the Jack Gibson NRL Coaches Award for best forward at the Ken Thornett Medal presentation in his debut season, as well as the Ken Thornett Player of the Year award in 2022. Throughout his career, spanning over a decade and more than 150 NRL games across four teams, Lane has encountered diverse challenges that have contributed significantly to his personal growth.
In addition to his on-field achievements, Shaun has been proactive in his off-season pursuits as well, having undertaken a global journey to produce a documentary focusing on mental health. This initiative underscores his unwavering commitment to advocating for mental well-being within the sporting community, a cause he deeply believes in. His efforts are part of a broader movement among athletes to destigmatise mental health discussions, particularly relevant in the high-pressure environment of professional sports.
However, Shaun’s journey hasn’t been without setbacks. In 2023, he faced injury challenges including a fractured jaw, a torn hamstring, and a dislocated elbow, which sidelines him for significant parts of the season. Shaun also faced scrutiny after an alleged ‘drug prank’ in 2019, however, despite this incident, he chose to focus on personal growth, aiming to contribute positively both as an athlete and a role model. These experiences have further reinforced Shaun’s resilience and determination to overcome adversity.
Beyond his sporting career, Shaun is currently pursuing a Master of Applied Positive Psychology at the University of Melbourne, driven by his passion well-being and mental skills. He aims to leverage his education and professional experiences to support others in achieving their full potential, both in sport and in life. His long-term goal is to transition into coaching, where he plans to mentor future generations using his unique blend of practical insights and academic knowledge.
Shaun's commitment extends far beyond the field; he is dedicated to making a positive impact in the world, striving to create a better future for everyone. His journey from initial challenges to becoming a role model for mental health advocacy reflects his evolution as both an athlete and a compassionate human being.
