Michael Maguire

Michael Maguire, often referred to as "Madge", is a renowned Australian rugby league coach and former professional player, currently serving as the head coach of the NSW Blues. His impressive career in rugby league spans roles as a player, assistant coach, and head coach, having left a lasting mark on the sport both within Australia and internationally.

Michael began his rugby league journey in the early 1990s as a versatile player, featuring as a fullback, centre, and winger for the Canberra Raiders. His playing career, also including a stint with the Adelaide Rams, was unfortunately cut short when he broke a bone in his neck playing against the Warriors. With great resilience, Michael made a comeback, however, sustained another neck injury resulting in his early retirement. Despite this setback, his unwavering passion for the sport led him to coaching, a path that would define his legacy in the sport. 

Transitioning to coaching, Michael first served as a strength and conditioning coach and later as an assistant coach at Canberra Raiders. He honed his skills under the mentorship of Craig Bellamy at the Melbourne Storm from 2004 to 2009, where he could be seen making significant contributions to the team’s success. This tenure was instrumental in shaping Michael's coaching philosophy and style, characterised by discipline, hard work, and tactical acumen.

In 2010, Michael took on his first head coaching role with Wigan Warriors in the English Super League. In his debut season, he led Wigan to their first Super League Grand Final victory in 12 years, and the following year, secured the 2011 Challenge Cup. These accomplishments further solidified Michael’s reputation as a remarkable coach with an undeniable talent for instilling a winning culture.

Michael’s return to the NRL in 2012 saw him take over as head coach of the South Sydney Rabbitohs. His tenure at South Sydney was highlighted by a historic achievement in 2014, when he guided the team to their first NRL Premiership in 43 years. Under his leadership, South Sydney also clinched the NRL Aukland Nines and the World Club Challenge in 2015, cementing his status as an elite coach in the sport. 

Following his stint with the Rabbitohs, Michael briefly stepped away from the NRL, but continued to make significant contributions in the rugby league community. He spent time coaching the New Zealand national team, where he brought a renewed sense of competitiveness and structure into their team. 

In 2019, Michael was appointed head coach of the Wests Tigers, aiming to rebuild the club’s strong work ethic and discipline. His role involved revitalising a struggling team amidst numerous challenges, including roster changes and injuries. 

Michael's coaching style is characterised by a strong focus on fitness, defence, and mental toughness. Known for his meticulous preparation and motivational skills, he consistently fosters long-term improvements in team culture and player development.

In November 2023, Michael was appointed head coach of the NSW Blues. He led the team to a historic State of Origin series win against the QLD Maroons. Later, in 2024, he became only the third Blues team in State of Origin history to secure a decider victory in Brisbane.

With a career marked by countless achievements and a reputation for powerful transformative coaching, Michael Maguire remains a central figure in rugby league.
