Tony Alexander has spent three decades in New Zealand and has written more about their economy than anyone else in New Zealand’s history. He has been employed as Chief Economist at New Zealand’s second largest bank, the Bank of New Zealand, since 1994, and is responsible for informing the board and senior management about economic developments and prospects, risks and opportunities, and provision of services for the bank’s staff and client base. He delivers 80-120 presentations every year, presenting to home buyers, property investors, and small to medium-sized businesses, covering underlying trends in the economy. Tony also produces a weekly publication, Tony’s View.
Tony is well known in the media, often being asked to comment on economic matters, in print, radio, television, on-line media. He discusses developments in the local and global economies and financial markets, and has worked in the production of numerous written publications including newspaper and magazine columns.
He also conducts the monthly BNZ Confidence Survey, where he provides near real-time snapshots of business sentiment, as well as meaningful insights into how businesses currently perceive their operating conditions. Tony also runs the BNZ-REINZ Residential Market Survey of the NZ residential real estate market, and the BNZ-Nine Rewards Consumer Trends Survey.
Prior to joining the BNZ, Tony could be seen as the principal economists at a stock broking firm in Wellington. He also gained essential experience as a Research Officer then Treasury Economist with Westpac Bank, initially working in Sydney, Australia, then New Zealand from 1987. He received first class honours from the University of Canterbury after completing his Masters of Arts in New Zealand.
Tony’s fascination for the concept of an economy and economic failure has allowed him to be a vastly accomplished public speaker. His talks are of high demand, presenting internationally at bank seminars, conferences, and client functions.
