From Record-Breaking Paralympian to Inspirational Leader and Advocate
Priya Cooper is a trailblazing Australian Paralympian, inspirational speaker, and advocate for breaking barriers. Born with cerebral palsy, Priya’s journey exemplifies the power of perseverance, passion, and a refusal to let challenges define one’s potential. Her magnetic presence and ability to connect with audiences of all ages and backgrounds have made her a highly sought-after motivational speaker. She has spoken at multiple events for major corporations and government organisations across the nation, often receiving standing ovations, and never failing to leave her listeners inspired to chase their dreams.
Priya began swimming as therapy at a young age, but it soon became her gateway to greatness. At just 17 years old, she burst onto the international stage at the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics, where she won three gold and two silver medals, set multiple world and Paralympic records, and carried the Australian flag at the closing ceremony. Over the course of her illustrious career, she competed in three Paralympic Games (1992, 1996, and 2000), winning an incredible nine gold, four silver, and four bronze medals, setting numerous world records along the way. Twice named co-captain of the Australian Paralympic Team, Priya’s leadership extended beyond the pool, inspiring teammates and fans alike.
Beyond her athletic triumphs, Priya holds a degree in Health Promotion and Media from Curtin University and has leveraged her platform to become a voice for inclusivity and empowerment. She has served as a commentator for major sporting events, including the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and continues to mentor and motivate through her business, Success is a Choice Global, which she co-founded with her husband, fellow Paralympian Rodney Bonsack.
Recognised with numerous accolades, Priya is a Member of the Order of Australia (OAM), a Sport Australia Hall of Fame inductee, and the 1999 Young Australian of the Year for Sport. However, her legacy extends far beyond the accolades; she has dedicated her life to uplifting others, whether through her ambassadorships for charitable causes, her role in public speaking, or her efforts to raise awareness about the potential of people with disabilities.
Today, as a mother of two, Priya continues to champion the belief that success is a choice, one fuelled by dedication, resilience, and heart. Whether inspiring audiences with her incredible story or breaking barriers through her advocacy, Priya Cooper remains a shining example of what it means to achieve greatness against all odds.
