Australia’s Fitness Icon, Sharing His Story From Commando to Mindfulness Expert
Steve Willis, widely known across Australia as ‘Commando Steve’, has been a prominent figure in the fitness industry and beyond since 2005, revered for his expertise in fitness, mindset, and nutrition. Originally from Queensland, Steve embarked on a remarkable journey that began with his service in the Australian Special Forces after joining the army in the 1990s. His military career included roles in the Infantry before specialising as a fitness instructor in the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, and later the 2nd Commando Regiment.
In 2004, Steve transitioned from military life to pursue a career in fitness, studying personal training and specialising in CrossFit. His dedication and skill were showcased when he achieved an impressive fourth place in the World CrossFit Games in California in 2009, a testament to his enduring commitment to physical excellence.
Steve gained national recognition as a trainer as a trainer on Channel Ten’s ‘Australia’s Biggest Loser’, a role he embodied with trademark intensity and dedication for eight seasons. His transformative approach motivated, inspired and pushed contestants to achieve unprecedented levels of physical and mental fitness, earning him widespread respect.
Beyond television, Steve has continued to push personal boundaries. In 2018, he tested his resilience by joining Channel Ten’s first-ever series of ‘Australian Survivor - ‘Champions vs. Contenders’, demonstrating his adaptability and survival skills honed through years of diverse experiences.
Steve’s journey has also been one of profound personal growth. Evolving beyond the tough persona portrayed on television, he has embraced mindfulness and self-awareness, enriching his life and transforming his approach to fitness and wellbeing.
