2016 Young Australians of the Year - dedicating their lives to helping others
Best friends Nicholas Marchesi and Lucas Patchett were awarded Young Australian of the Year 2016, when they came up with the revolutionary idea to remodel an old van into a free mobile laundry to assist the homeless.
Beginning in 2014, Orange Sky Laundry was a world first idea which has rapidly expanded across Australia in the form of 9 vans, delivering a washing service to the Sunshine Coast, South East Melbourne, Perth, Gold Coast, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra.
The vans, which are fitted with two commercial washing machines and two dryers, provide a washing service to over 62 locations and wash over 5.6 tonnes of laundry a week. Orange Sky Laundry brings people together from all over Australia and facilitates hours of conversations ensuring that homeless people are provided the basic necessities of life.
In February of 2015, Nicholas and Lucas took their mobile laundry to North Queensland to assist cyclone ravaged neighbourhoods. To date, Sky Orange Laundry has washed over 140,747 kilograms of laundry and has enabled over 35,501 hours of positive conversation to occur as a result.
Nicholas and Lucas have dedicated their lives to treating others the way they want to be treated and have resorted respect, health standards and have reduced the stress on city resources. The duo now have a goal to expand their services across Australia and aim to positively connect the community and improve the lives of others.
