Phil Kearns AM is one of Australia’s most celebrated rugby union players, a two-time Rugby World Cup winner, and a highly respected sports commentator. With 67 Test caps for the Wallabies and 10 appearances as captain, Phil’s career was defined by his relentless determination, leadership, and skill. Regarded as one of the world’s finest hookers, he played a pivotal role in Australia’s triumphs on the international stage.
Phil’s resilience was tested when injuries threatened to derail his career, but his triumphant return to the Wallabies after an 18-month battle with achilles and knee issues became a defining moment, symbolising his unyielding spirit. Following his retirement, Phil transitioned seamlessly into the corporate world, serving as a senior executive with Investec, while also becoming a familiar face in rugby broadcasting with Fox Sports. His natural charisma and candid wit have made him a highly sought-after media personality, keynote speaker, and brand ambassador.
Off the field, Phil’s passion for giving back is evident through his extensive charity work. A dedicated advocate for child safety, he spearheaded a national driveway safety campaign following a personal family tragedy. His commitment to the community was recognised in 2017 when he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). In 2018, he was inducted into the Australian Rugby Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy in the sport.
A proud alumnus of Newington College and the University of New South Wales, where he studied Economics, Phil balances his professional life with a deep dedication to his family. His daughter, Matilda “Tilly” Kearns, continues the family’s sporting tradition, having represented Australia in water polo at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
