Legendary Australian cricket player with a mission towards gender equality and diversity
As Australia’s most-capped female test player, Christina Matthews holds an incredibly successful career in cricket that has gone on to inspire players of all backgrounds. With the record for the most dismissals by an Australian wicketkeeper, Christina is quickly transforming the previously male-dominated sport of cricket.
Christina is one of only three women in the world to hold the position of CEO of a first-class cricket association. Drawing upon her extensive leadership experience as the former Australian Women’s Team Vice-Captain, the Australian Women’s Team Manager and Chair of the National Selection Panel. During her tenure as CEO of the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) Christine had a particular focus on developing the business strategy through community engagement and advocating for change.
A well-respected voice within the Australian Cricket Community, Christina has used her platform to promote real equality from the pitch to the boardroom. Her focus on creating a gender-equal sport has seen participation from female cricket players increase 550% across Western Australia. Additionally, she has consistently ensured equal gender representation within leadership positions at WACA.
Outside of her WACA role, Christina continues to advocate for important issues in the community like mental health. Turning her love of cycling into fundraising endeavours, Christina was able to raise over $40,000 for Ride for Youth, a charity focused on youth mental health.
Her commitment to her work and social impact has been recognised numerous times. The West Australia named Christina one of the 100 Most Influential Western Australians in 2016. She would also go on to be a finalist in the Sport Award category of the Western Australian of The Year Awards in 2019.
