Cate Campbell

One of Australia’s most inspirational Olympic swimming legends

Born in Malawai, Cate Campbellbegan learning to swim in Lake Malawi by her former synchronised swimmer mother Jenny. After moving to Australia in 2001, Cate and her sister Bronte joined the local swimming club in Indooroopilly, Brisbane. It was here that she would fall in love with competitive swimming, quickly rising the ranks to be a winning gold medallist at the Australian Age Campionships at just 13 years old.

By 16, she had broken the Australian & Commonwealth 50m Freestyle records, earning herself a spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. With remarkable maturity and poise on the biggest stage in world, Cate went home with Bronze medals in the 50m Freestyle and 4 x 100m Freestyle events. A year later, she followed up with another Bronze at the 2009 World Championships.

In the 2012 London Olympics, Cate solidified her talent as an Olympic champion when she took part in Australia’s successful 4 x 100m Freestyle team. In 2013, she took home Gold in the 100m Freestyle and three additional Silver medals, making her a World Champion. To complete the trio, Cate became a Commonwealth Champion in 2014 with three Gold medals.

Throughout her career, Cate has continued to demonstrate her love and talent for the sport, with a second World Championship Gold medal and a new 100m Freestyle Short-Course World Record in 2015. She also has a second Olympic Gold from the 2016 Rio Olympics, three more Gold medals in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and five more medals (two Gold) in the 2019 World Championships. Cate has also won the 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup with honours in the women’s ranking, as well as helped the London Roar top their group in the inaugural International Swimming League in the same year.

In the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Cate was announced as the Australian Flag Bearer, and even came away with a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle and a stellar result in her two relay teams. In 2021, Cate qualified to swim at her fourth Olympics, making her one of three elite Australian swimmers to compete at four Olympics. After four Olympic Games, Cate sits amongst the greatest swimmer to represent Australia with 8 medals to her name.

Currently studying a Bachelor of Communications, Cate is interested in combining her love of sport and media. She is a regular contributor for opinion columns in Brisbane Courier-Mail, and has co-authored a book, ‘Sister Secrets: Life Lessons from the Pool to the Podium’, with her sister Bronte.
