Tess Lloyd, a 28-year-old sailor from Melbourne, is the embodiment of resilience and determination. Her journey to becoming an Olympian is marked by a remarkable story of overcoming adversity. Tess commenced her sailing voyage at the age of five, driven by an unwavering dream of Olympic glory. Her talent swiftly propelled her up the ranks, securing top positions in various championships, including a remarkable first place at the Australian Nationals in 2012, followed by notable finishes at international events.
However, at the age of 16, Tess faced a daunting setback during the 2012 Australian Youth Championships when a collision with a windsurfer knocked her unconscious, resulting in a fractured skull, brain surgery, and a three-week coma. Despite this distressing ordeal and loss of basic functions like walking and talking, Tess didn’t give up on her Olympic aspirations. With sheer determination and months of rigorous rehabilitation, she reclaimed her place on the water within a mere 10 months.
Although setbacks prevented her from competing in the Rio 2016 Olympics, Tess persisted undeterred, intensifying her pursuit of Olympic glory. Partnered with Jaime Ryan, Tess embarked on a daunting journey towards Tokyo 2020, showcasing her tenacity and skill in the 49erFX class. Despite the harsh competition, Tess and Jaime delivered commendable performances, culminating in a 13th place finish.
