Philippa 'Pip' Courtney

Award-Winning Journalist & Respected Voice in Rural Reporting

With over three decades of experience at the ABC, Philippa ‘Pip’ Courtney is one of Australia’s most respected rural journalists. As the long-standing host of Landline since 2012, Pip has built a reputation for insightful, compelling storytelling that brings the challenges and triumphs of rural Australia to the national stage.

Growing up in Tasmania, Pip’s passion for agriculture and journalism was shaped by her family’s deep ties to both industries, with her father, Michael Courtney, having been a renowned print journalist and editor. Initially torn between a career in wool classing and reporting, Pip ultimately pursued journalism after studying politics and English at the University of Tasmania. In 1993, she found the perfect blend of both interests when she joined Landline.

Pip’s work has earned her widespread recognition, including multiple awards for excellence in rural journalism. In 2011, her two-part feature on Queensland’s coal seam gas industry won national and international acclaim, securing the International Star Prize for Rural Broadcasting. She has also been honoured with Clarion Awards, the Queensland Rural Press Club's Excellence in Rural Journalism Award, and was inducted into the Queensland Press Club’s Rural Journalism Hall of Fame in 2018.

Beyond the screen, Pip is also a highly sought-after presenter, bringing her warmth, professionalism, and journalistic expertise to conferences, awards ceremonies, and industry events across Australia. With an innate ability to connect with both rural and urban audiences, Pip Courtney is a trusted and authoritative voice on the issues shaping Australia’s agricultural landscape.
