Cyber Security Expert and Senior Technologist at Amazon Web Services
Jess Modini is an IT leader, lecturer and cyber security researcher. Jess started her career in uniform in the Royal Australian Air Force and has over 13 years' experience working in both technical and management roles across public and private sector engineering, cyber security and project management. She is currently a Senior Technologist at Amazon Web Services. Prior, she was the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) Engineering Manager. Jess is passionate about security, global cyber threat intelligence sharing and multidisciplinary approaches to cyber resilience.
Jess holds 5 Master’s qualifications in Cybersecurity Operations, Systems Engineering, Space Operations, Project Management and International Relations (Security). She is currently undertaking a Doctorate in Cyber Security, focussing on applications of epidemiology to cyber security (Cyber Epidemiology) for malware propagation analysis at scale. Jess is an inventor and patent holder and is currently collaborating with a Taiwanese research team from the Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica. This research explores the application of Artificial Intelligence for the modelling of Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) towards improved attack detection.
Jess is also a casual academic, guest lecturing and teaching Masters level subjects in Cyber Security at UNSW ADFA where she shares her depth of knowledge and speaks about real-world industry applications of cyber security in industry. She is passionate about mentoring cyber security students, to help them navigate careers in cybersecurity. Jess also features in GROK Academy courses, teaching topics including Multi-Factor Authentication and Monitoring and Securing Networks.
Jess is a regular speaker and panellist at industry events and conferences, including AISA CyberCon and AWS Sydney Summit which has an audience of over, 14,000 people. Jess is also a member of the Australasian Society for Computers and Law (AUSCL) leadership team and Cyber Risk and Governance committee - advancing education and advocacy at the intersection of technology, law and society.
