Sean Choolburra is an esteemed cultural ambassador known for his charismatic and vibrant performances that seamlessly blend traditional Aboriginal dance, didgeridoo playing, storytelling, and comedy. Hailing from Townsville and proudly representing his Gu-Gu-Yalanji, Kalkadoon, Kandju, and Bwgcolman heritage, Sean has carved out a unique niche as Australia's leading Indigenous entertainer.
Sean's illustrious comedy career began in 2002 when he won the NSW Raw Comedy final, catapulting him into the national spotlight. He has hosted NITV’s Express Yourself and made memorable appearances on ABC's Playschool and the beloved children’s program Bluey. His comedic talent has also been showcased on The Footy Show, Thank God You’re Here, and the prestigious Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala.
As the graduate of NAISDA College, Sean founded Sydney’s pioneering Ngaru Dance Company, which later evolved into the renowned Descendance dance troupe, and has also danced internationally with the prestigious Bangarra Dance Theatre, performing by invitation for luminaries such as the Dalai Lama, Hale & Pace, and HRH The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles., and also opened Sydney’s Plant Hollywood with Richard Wilkins in 1996.
Beyond dance, Sean has also made significant contributions as a cultural advocate and entertainer. He has toured numerous schools and colleges across Australia, Canada, Japan, and New Zealand for over 15 years, engaging students with his energetic presentations that combine historical facts, spiritual wisdom, and a unique humour. His role as a traditional movement and language consultant for productions like ‘The Drover’s Wife’ highlights his commitment to preserving and promoting Indigenous culture through theatre and performance. Sean is a passionate ambassador and communicator for positive health, education, and employment, which has seen him promote “No Smokes” and tobacco campaigns, employment messages for Indigenous Jobs Australia, Fred Hallows Trachoma Program, and Stronger Smarter.
His performances have been viewed across countless major festivals worldwide, including Dreaming, Woodford, Adelaide Fringe, Edinburgh Fringe, and beyond. Recently, Sean has expanded his global reach with cultural performances in New York, America, and Chengdu and Chongqing in China, captivating international audiences with his dynamic blend of traditional and contemporary entertainment.
