Everybody has a different learning style, which may include visualising, auditory and
tactile/kinesthetic. Coaching is no different and a successful coach can flex their style to
incorporate the needs of the coachee.
Our coaching style has been developed from personal experiences coaching and training
individuals across multiple professions, demographics and cultures, including working
with the University of Tasmania (UTAS), Queensland Health, Queensland Police and
multiple corporate teams.
Through a combination of feedback, reflection, guidance and lived experience, we use
the following leadership coaching styles–adjusting as required based on the needs and
personality of the of the individual–to support their learning outcomes:
• Democratic – when freedom and accountability is required to provide self-
empowerment and control to the individual
• Authoritarian – used sparingly, this style provides firm guidance when an individual
is struggling to grasp the end goal/objective or feels stuck in a rut
• Holistic – used to identify the individuals own view of self value and as a means of
ensuring balance across their personal and professional life is obtained
• Autocratic – used to instill structure towards a coaching plan and the individuals'
goals, effective with personality types that seek structure to their learning and
development
• Vision – encouraging empowerment with clear direction and focus, this style works
on a partnership approach with feedback and reflection unlocking individual
motivation.
Whether you are leading a team of two or 1,000, the principles of leadership remain the same. Based on experiences gained over the past two decades, leading and supporting public, private and military teams across the globe, we have been fortunate enough to learn the benefits and challenges of effective leadership firsthand. Through these opportunities, we identified 8 traits of
leadership that we believe provide the foundation of any leadership journey. These traits underpin our approach to workshops, coaching and leadership support, and we adapt them to integrate with multiple personality and performance assessment tools. If you wished to undertake any preparation, design or development of coaching activities with your senior leaders or teams, we would welcome the opportunity to collaborate with you and use either as little or as much of these traits as you deemed necessary to support these activities. The benefit of the traits being they can be easily reflected on and incorporated into coaching of leaders and teams and provide useful tools for integration into personal and professional development.
Nobody shares the same world view, and when looking at leadership,
resilience and team building, everybody has their own take on what good
looks like. Whilst this can lead to issues trying to identify a shared common
ground on better practice, with the right support, structure, and engagement
there is the opportunity to leverage all these different views in a workshop
environment and collectively enhance a team’s perspective, capabilities and
motivation.
Workshops provide participants with the tools required to empower
themselves and continue their personal and professional development. Using
a combination of lived experience, academic research and staff engagement,
our workshops allow teams to build on their existing capabilities in a
controlled and supportive environment that focuses on psychological safety
and nurturing a growth mindset.
The program has been developed to provide participants with both physical and mental challenges, taking them away from their familiar operating environment and challenging them with 'leadership in the field' scenarios. The program is designed deliberately to ensure participants understand as little as possible about the course before attending. Their resilience is being tested from the start.
The rationale behind this becomes apparent as the experience unfolds. Providing learning opportunities by introducing stress and lack of control in complex situations.
The expectations and outcomes will be different for everyone based upon their self-
awareness and approach towards the experience. The techniques used and coaching provided has been developed into a structured program from the instructor's extensive experience developing corporate, frontline first responder and military training evolutions.
Through unique experiences including, military service in the British Army;
supporting others with their Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD); and managing
personal mental health challenges, we have identified 5 resilience principles to
manage and develop resilience within personal and professional environments.
This principles provide the foundation of the work that we undertake with clients
and overlap into all elements of the team building and leadership work that you
may undertake.
