Richard Champion, affectionately known as “Champs”, is a crowd favourite for conferences, corporate events, and media engagements. A former professional athlete turned dynamic entertainer, Richard seamlessly blends professionalism, humour, and warmth, making him a highly sought-after speaker, MC, and host. His exceptional ability to connect with audiences comes from a remarkable career spanning elite sports, media, and entertainment.
Originally hailing from Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, Richard began his football journey with SANFL’s Woodville before being drafted by the Brisbane Bears in the 1988 VFL Draft. He made his AFL debut in 1991, quickly establishing himself as a tough and dependable backman. Wearing the iconic number 1 guernsey, Richard became a fan favourite during some of the Bears’ most challenging seasons, celebrated not only for his resilience on the field but also for his infectious off-field charisma.
Richard’s 14-year football career is packed with highlights. He played 183 AFL games and was a cornerstone of the Bears’ transition into the finals for the first time in 1995, a moment that famously brought him to tears, reflecting his deep connection to the club’s journey. Following the Brisbane Bears’ merger with Fitzroy, Richard was part of the inaugural Brisbane Lions team in 1997. Over the years, he earned accolades including Brisbane Lions Life Membership, “Most Professional Player” in 1994, and multiple “Best Clubman” honours, qualifying for the AFL’s prestigious 200 Club before retiring in 2000.
Post-football, Richard smoothly transitioned into media and entertainment, where his vibrant personality and natural stage presence shone. He became a household name with his winning AFL Talent Show performance and unforgettable Jimmy Barnes impersonations, later showcasing his vocal talents on Channel Seven’s ‘It Takes Two’. Richard continued his musical journey as the frontman of the classic rock supergroup ‘The Filthy Animals’, performing alongside Australian music legends at corporate events and gigs.
On-screen and on-air, Richard has built a successful media career in Queensland. He co-hosts the ‘Sportsbet Breakfast Show’ on Radio TAB, commentates Brisbane Lions matches as part of Triple M’s AFL Call Team, and is a familiar face on Channel Seven programs such as ‘The Great South East’ and ‘Creek to Coast’. His versatility and charm have made Richard a standout in the media landscape.
As a speaker, Richard captivates audiences with his sharp wit, genuine storytelling, and boundless energy. Drawing on experiences from the locker room to the television studio, he delivers anecdotes that are as inspiring as they are entertaining. Whether sharing behind-the-scenes tales of his AFL career, showcasing his musical talents, or hosting with effortless charisma, Richard ensures every event is engaging and memorable.
Off the stage, Richard enjoys life in Brisbane with his wife Anne-Marie and their daughters Georgia and Grace. A keen golfer and adventurer at heart, he embraces life’s challenges with the same competitive spirit that defined his football career.
